Mt
St Helens
Located in the South-West corner of Washington State, U.S.A.
Mt St Helens had been know for its towering peak and perfect
symmetry; all that changed 1980 when the mountain exploded
removing much of its top and north slope. This site is about
a virtual tour around that post explosion mountain.
The Data
The show is entirely "virtual", meaning the mountain
used in our show was computer generated. Our model is "rough"
so we do not show a great deal of detail. All color and shading
are arbitrarily set and defendant only on the modelers preferences.
The result of all this - an accurate but rough rendering of
Mt St Helens based on geospacial
data and model preferences.
The Journey
A circumscribed path about the mountain using the mountains
lava dome for our focal point. The path we chose is relatively
close to the mountain and based on a "flight" smoothing
algorithm which should explain the proximity of the mountain
to our camera. Images are taken at every 5 degrees of separation
- again a designer preference.
The Result
A block of images we call "Mt St Helens Slide Show".
Site Task :
This site is as much about providing a visual expedience
as it is about developing a low tech solution to a high tech
problem ( 3D viewing ). To the extent that we have achieved
our goal is ultimately up to you - please let us know what
you think.
The author :
Ken Workman - enjoys writing applications, riding snowmobiles
and engineering things.
